Today we swing into World Lemur Day, a celebration of Madagascar’s most famous (and fantastically expressive) residents — the lemurs! With their big eyes, soft fur, and curious personalities, it’s no wonder these primates have captured hearts around the world. But lemurs are more than just adorable — they’re crucial to their ecosystems, spreading seeds and keeping Madagascar’s forests thriving.

Unfortunately, lemurs are also the most endangered group of mammals on Earth, with over 90% of species at risk due to deforestation and illegal hunting. From the ring-tailed lemur’s iconic striped tail to the tiny mouse lemur — the world’s smallest primate — each species plays a vital role in the island’s unique biodiversity.
