August 30 is International Whale Shark Day, and no, that’s not a typo—whale sharks are real, they're massive, and despite the name, they are not whales... or particularly sharky. They're the world’s largest fish and probably the most chill sea giants you’ll ever meet.
Here are some fin-tastic facts to float your boat:
🌊 They’re Big... Like, Really Big Whale sharks can grow up to 12 metres long—that’s about the size of a school bus with gills. But don’t worry, they’re completely harmless... unless you’re a tiny shrimp.
🍽️ They Eat Like Giant Vacuum Cleaners Despite their size, whale sharks are filter feeders—they swim with their mouths wide open, slurping up plankton, krill, and the occasional small fish. Think less Jaws, more Dyson.
🔵 Fashion Icons of the Sea Each whale shark has a unique pattern of spots, like a fingerprint made by a polka-dot-loving jellybean. Scientists use these spot patterns to identify individuals—no name tags needed.
💨 Slow and Steady Wins the Ocean Whale sharks are not in a hurry. They cruise at a leisurely 5 km/h, proving once and for all that slowpokes can still rule the sea (and look cool doing it).
🗺️ Ocean Globetrotters These gentle giants are known to travel thousands of kilometres across oceans.
