Remembrance Day Reflection: Honouring the Animals of War

As we pause this Remembrance Day to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served, we also take a moment to remember the countless animals who stood beside them.

Horses, donkeys, camels and mules carried soldiers and supplies through harsh conditions. Dogs served as messengers, sentries, and companions. Pigeons carried vital communications across enemy lines, and even cats played their part keeping ships and camps free from vermin.

These animals endured unimaginable hardship—wounds, starvation, disease, exhaustion, and exposure to the elements—all without choice or understanding of the human conflict around them. Many never returned home.

Today, we remember not only the courage of the people who served, but also the loyalty, suffering and sacrifice of the animals who shared their journey. Their stories remind us of the deep bond between humans and animals—one built on trust, service, and compassion.

Lest we forget—both human and animal.
