August 19 is World Orangutan Day, and it’s the perfect excuse to go a little wild for the red-haired wonders of the rainforest. These shaggy, tree-dwelling primates are some of our closest relatives—and possibly the only ones with worse bed hair than us.

Here are some orangut-awesome facts to swing into:

🦧 They’re Tree-Huggers (Literally) Orangutans spend up to 90% of their lives in trees. They build new leafy nests to sleep in every night—basically, they’re nature’s original glampers.

🧠 They’re Freakishly Smart Orangutans use tools, understand cause and effect, and have even been known to steal canoes (true story!). If you give one a screwdriver, don’t be surprised if it disassembles your shed.

💪 Long Arms, Don’t Care Their arms can stretch up to 2 metres—longer than their entire bodies. Perfect for swinging through trees… or grabbing snacks from across the room without moving. Relatable.

👩‍👧 Single Mums of the Jungle Orangutan mums deserve a standing ovation. They raise their babies solo and stick with them for up to 7–8 years, teaching them everything from food-finding to nest-building. That’s longer than most human toddlers let you go to the bathroom alone.

🔥 Redheads of the Rainforest Orangutans are the only great apes with naturally red hair. Their shaggy ginger locks make them look like wise, forest-dwelling philosophers—who maybe haven’t seen a brush since 1994.

But here’s the serious bit: orangutans are critically endangered, with habitat loss due to deforestation and illegal wildlife trade putting them at risk. World Orangutan Day is all about raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts to keep these incredible creatures swinging through the treetops for generations to come.
