Today we celebrate International Snow Leopard Day, shining a spotlight on one of the world’s most mysterious and magnificent big cats — the snow leopard. Known as the Ghost of the Mountains, this elusive predator roams the high, icy peaks of Central Asia, blending perfectly into the rocky landscape with its thick, spotted coat.

Snow leopards are masters of survival, enduring freezing temperatures and steep cliffs with ease. Their long, fluffy tails help them balance on treacherous slopes (and double as cozy scarves when they curl up to sleep!).

Sadly, fewer than 7,000 snow leopards remain in the wild. They face threats from poaching, habitat loss, and conflict with herders protecting livestock. Conservation groups across Asia are working hard to protect these cats and promote coexistence with local communities.

Fun fact: Snow leopards can leap up to 15 meters in a single bound — that’s longer than a bus!
