Today we celebrate International Sawfish Day, a day dedicated to one of the oceanās most extraordinary and misunderstood creatures ā the sawfish! With their long, toothed āsawā (called a rostrum), these incredible fish look like something out of a marine sci-fi movie ā but that saw isnāt just for show. Itās used to detect, stun, and slice through schools of fish with lightning speed.
Sadly, all five species of sawfish are now critically endangered, mainly due to habitat loss, entanglement in fishing nets, and illegal trade in their distinctive rostrums. Once found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, theyāve disappeared from much of their former range.
But thereās hope! Conservation efforts ā from protecting mangrove habitats to banning harmful fishing gear ā are helping sawfish populations slowly recover.

Despite their name, sawfish arenāt sharks ā theyāre actually rays with attitude! šš
