Today we celebrate International Sawfish Day, a day dedicated to one of the ocean’s most extraordinary and misunderstood creatures — the sawfish! With their long, toothed ā€œsawā€ (called a rostrum), these incredible fish look like something out of a marine sci-fi movie — but that saw isn’t just for show. It’s used to detect, stun, and slice through schools of fish with lightning speed.

Sadly, all five species of sawfish are now critically endangered, mainly due to habitat loss, entanglement in fishing nets, and illegal trade in their distinctive rostrums. Once found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, they’ve disappeared from much of their former range.

But there’s hope! Conservation efforts — from protecting mangrove habitats to banning harmful fishing gear — are helping sawfish populations slowly recover.

Despite their name, sawfish aren’t sharks — they’re actually rays with attitude! šŸŒšŸ’™
