August 13 is International Wolf Day, a time to celebrate the mysterious, majestic, and slightly misunderstood members of the canine world. Wolves have long been cast as the villains in fairy tales, but in reality, they’re loyal, intelligent, and way cooler than they get credit for.

Here are some howl-arious and fascinating facts to sink your teeth into:

🐺 They’re Basically Nature’s Choir Wolves don’t just howl at the moon for dramatic effect—they howl to communicate with their pack, mark territory, or just say, “Hey, I’m over here!” Bonus: each wolf’s howl is unique, like a vocal fingerprint with fur.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family First, Always Wolves live in tight-knit packs, usually made up of family members. They raise pups together, hunt as a team, and yes, probably argue about whose turn it is to bring dinner.

🐾 Built for the Long Haul Wolves can travel up to 50km a day and run at speeds of over 60 km/h when chasing prey. Basically, they’re furry endurance athletes with paws.

🧠 Cleverer Than They Look (and They Already Look Pretty Smart) Wolves have complex social structures and problem-solving skills that put many humans to shame. They can strategize while hunting and even play tricks on each other (and you).

📦 They Invented the “Pack Mentality” Being part of a pack means every wolf has a role. The “alpha” concept is more about parenting than power
