Every third Saturday in August, we celebrate National Honey Bee Day, a chance to give thanks to the tiny, fuzzy, winged workers who basically keep the planet running—and do it while dressed in adorable stripey outfits.
Honey bees might be small, but they pack a buzz-worthy punch. Here are some fun and fascinating facts that are sweeter than honey:
🍯 They Make Your Breakfast Possible One out of every three bites of food you eat exists thanks to bee pollination. So next time you bite into an apple, avocado, or almond, remember: a bee probably helped with that. You're welcome.
💃 They Dance to Communicate Honey bees don’t text, but they do waggle dance. If a bee finds a great flower patch, she’ll boogie in a figure-eight pattern to tell the others where to go. It’s nature’s cutest GPS system.
👑 One Queen to Rule Them All Each hive has one queen, and her job is to lay eggs—up to 2,000 a day! She also produces pheromones that keep the rest of the colony in line. It's basically like running a 24/7 maternity ward and government at the same time.
🌍 They Travel the World Without Leaving Home To make just one pound of honey, bees must visit around 2 million flowers and fly over 80,000 kilometers. That’s like going around the world twice… just to make your toast topping.
😴 They Sleep Holding Hands (Sort Of) Bees are social even when they nap. Young bees have been seen sleeping in flowers while holding each other’s legs, because apparently even insects believe in the buddy system.
