6 Year Old Nzuri a much-loved resident of Sydney Zoo and her unborn calf passed away during active labour on July 17.

Giraffe births are always complex, given the size of the animal and the potential risks associated with their anatomy and physiology. Veterinary professionals from several institutions attended and were highly skilled and well-equipped to manage such emergencies, however this heartbreaking outcome underscores just how unpredictable and delicate wildlife care can be.

Nzuri had become a familiar face to visitors and a favourite among keepers. Her loss, along with that of her unborn calf, has sent waves of sorrow through the zoo community and beyond.
