Tick Season Is Here – Keep Your Pets Safe!

Tick season is well and truly here, and we are hearing of an increase in tick cases. Now is the time to make sure your pets are protected.

Paralysis ticks can be extremely dangerous to dogs and cats. Just one tick can cause serious illness, with signs progressing quickly and potentially becoming life-threatening.Know the signs

Early signs of tick paralysis can include:

• Weakness or wobbliness, particularly in the back legs

• A change in their bark or meow

• Difficulty swallowing or excessive drooling

• Vomiting or gagging

• Coughing or changes in breathing

• Reluctance to eat

• Lethargy or unusual behaviour

• As the paralysis progresses, pets can develop significant breathing difficulties and may require intensive veterinary care.

​Prevention is key. The best way to protect your pet is to use reliable tick prevention consistently and according to your veterinarian's recommendations. Even pets that spend most of their time indoors can be exposed to ticks.

During tick season, we also recommend checking your pet every day, particularly after they have been outside. Pay close attention to the head, neck, ears, between the toes and around the mouth and gums, but remember that ticks can attach anywhere on the body.

If you find a tick, remove it promptly and contact your veterinarian for advice, even if your pet appears completely normal.

Don't wait for symptoms Tick paralysis can progress rapidly. If your pet develops any unusual signs during tick season — particularly weakness, gagging, vomiting or breathing changes — seek veterinary attention immediately.
